Titian

Titian
(1477–1576)
   Artist.
Titian learnt painting in Venice under Giovanni Bellini. Giorgione was a fellow-student and became a life-long friend. During his long life (he lived to be ninety-nine), Titian painted many pictures with religious themes, accepting commissions for altar pieces as well as secular portraits and historical scenes. His technique was to influence Tintoretto and the Baroque masters. Among his many achievements must be numbered Christ Crowned with Thorns, painted in his old age, which glows, despite the horror of the subject, with a peculiar religious calm.
